The youth is generally not well represented by the traditional media in the Middle East and North Africa region.

To address the issue, Networks of Mediterranean Youth (NET-MED Youth) and media reform project MedMedia collaborate on a Youth on Screen initiative, which aims to empower young citizens to make their voices heard in broadcast media. Youth on Screen is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNESCO and BBC Media Action.

“In some countries less than 1 per cent of media content covers youth issues. We can’t expect their voices to be heard if the media doesn’t work for them”, said Rosario Soraide of UNESCO.

The initiative faces a multitude of political, financial and cultural challenges. Many areas are facing constant political struggle and war, and the freedom of expression is still being tested and challenged.
